SP Setia Bhd is not only a reputable home-grown property developer that delivers on quality, well-designed and innovative property projects, it is also making immense contribution in the human resources and employee relations front.

The award-winning developer has added another feather to its cap by emerging the overall champion of the Aon Hewitt Best Employers 2013 in Malaysia Study, repeating its feat in 2011.

This is not the first time human resources consulting and outsourcing company Aon Hewitt has applauded S P Setia as a shining example of an outstanding employer. The company has also made it to the list of Best Employer in 2003, 2005 and 2009.

Apart from its leading position as a property developer, S P Setia is also renowned for its attractive staff remuneration packages, opportunities for career advancement and progressive work environment.

The company’s charismatic president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, a former banker turned property developer, knows only too well what it takes to promote loyalty and a sense of ownership among his 1,500-strong employees.

“I am delighted that S P Setia has been voted Overall Best Employer in Malaysia again. No company can stay on top without the support of a strong team of dedicated people who are every bit as committed to the Group’s vision as the CEO is. This award from our own employees and following a study into our people practices by Aon Hewitt truly demonstrates the unity and strength of the spirit of Team Setia.”

“As we have worked hard to give every member a strong stake in the company’s success over the years, they have rewarded the company by giving us their best. It is because of their combined talent, creativity and industry that we have achieved our many successes so I dedicate this award to all the remarkable men and women who are Team Setia, not just in Malaysia but in every country in which we operate,” says Liew.

Being recognised as a Best Employer for five times and winning numerous industry awards both locally and internationally have given S P Setia and its staff a sense of pride, and this has further strengthened the level of engagement at the company.

One of the most powerful engagement tactics at S P Setia is the CEO Dialogue where Liew himself is committed to meet the staff face-to-face to deliver his leadership message and also to address employee’s concerns. Any issues brought up to his attention are attended to immediately with Liew’s on the spot answers and commitment to resolve them.

The twice yearly dialogue session is appreciated by all his people especially those who are not based at the corporate HQ and do not get to see him often.

Liew says the open two-way communication, coupled with mutual trust relationship are powerful tools for workforce engagement. “As the CEO, it is my duty to speak from the heart and more importantly I don’t shy away from delivering hard messages,” he states.

EMPOWERING THE STAFF

Aside from this open feedback and discussion at the CEO Dialogue, S P Setia also administers the People Pulse Survey which is essentially a work climate survey which is conducted annually.

The results provide the company with additional insights into its people issues and engagement level. Liew shares that all general managers and heads of departments (HODs) are held accountable for maintaining a high employee engagement score. “This is how we nip the people issues in the bud,” he says with pride.

Another innovative employee engagement activity is the Good Morning Setia sessions where HODs and managers meet their staff every morning. This is a get together session where everyone has a chance to converse about matters apart from work. Liew says it is an effective platform where operations and customer service issues are discussed and addressed. It is also an opportunity for sharing success stories, inspiring moments and more importantly for managers to convey and reinforce the company culture and establish better working relationships with the team members.

“For any S P Setia staff, being part of Team Setia is a given and everyone lives by the company’s vision To Be the Best in All We Do,” says Liew, adding that the company’s brand is built on the foundation of Team Setia which represents a company of dynamic people who go the extra mile together both internally and externally.

“Internally and externally we brand ourselves as the best and live up to our vision. We prove it by our track record of industry recognitions we have received, the speed of business growth and our financial results. New hires are inducted into the culture from day one itself and this culture and team spirit is instilled in our daily work life,” says Liew with confidence.

TALENT DEVELOPMENT

With the company going global in the last six years, Liew says S P Setia’s people strategy focuses on talent development and management to meet its human resource needs. Now that the group has operations in Vietnam, Australia, Singapore, China, Indonesia and the United Kingdom, it realises the importance of developing internationally savvy talents and is pursuing International Mobility Opportunities in a bigger way than before.

In preparation for full operations in London and Qingzhou for example, the company foresaw the need to second talents to fill key positions in those countries. “We identify these talents ahead and put them through an orientation programme ranging from one to three weeks depending on the job nature and position. This is to allow the key talents to experience the living conditions in a foreign city, familiarise themselves with the project and integrate with the local team. While it may be a costly exercise, we believe this is the most effective way of helping the seconded staff ease into the new environment and hit the ground running,” Liew explains.

Hot on the path of venturing into new markets overseas, S P Setia is presented with a new set of challenges as it embraces an increasingly diverse workforce. “We are attracting, developing and retaining a high calibre talent and developing our workforce to be internationally savvy. There will be more emphasis on international assignment opportunities and cross-border exposure going forward,” he says.

Liew adds that S P Setia wants to be known for leaders who are able to identify ideas and seek opportunities, adapt them to the market and execute them faster than competition. This requires leaders to demonstrate the competency of being visionary, passionate and inspiring, think strategically, possess the execution power and have the willingness to develop people. Under its Leadership DNA initiative, it has set the direction on the development of leaders and high potential talents for the company’s development and growth.

The company also has a comprehensive training calendar that caters to staff from all divisions to encourage them to hone their skills and pick up new ones. All trainings are included in the staff’s key performance index. This year, the company also ventured into uncharted waters and took an unconventional route in terms of talent development. It sent a team of 80 staff on a Mount Kinabalu expedition. “The main purpose is to bring out execution power, drive, resilience and teamwork amongst Team Setia,” says Liew.

One of the main objectives is so that the employees are inspired to have confidence in themselves. This maiden expedition, which will become a flagship talent development programme, was divided into two teams that was led by chief operating officer Datuk Voon Tin Yow and executive vice-president Datuk Wong Tuck Wai.

Apart from this unique programme, staff already enjoy interaction opportunities through company-wide events such as the company’s annual dinners, family days, staff parties and various recreational activities organised by the Setia Sports and Recreation Club.

Given the CEO’s hands-on and proactive management style and the immense growth opportunities available to the company, S P Setia is set to trail blaze many more innovative changes that the staff can look forward to partake in.
